I am getting my pets professionally photographed this weekend & am a little nervous. My boyfriend and I have 3 cats that get along pretty well and one puppy who likes the cats a lot more than they like her!

The photographer sounds very confident and doesn’t have a problem with this at all, but I would have never thought to get my cats pictures taken. I think this is going to be crazy!

Does anybody have any experience getting their pets photographed, any hints, tricks or stories would be appreciated. I’m so excited but as I said, a little worried.

The cats seem fine with pictures at home but I’m thinking that this might me a little more intense than they are used to. Also, they are not show cats or anything so they are not used to going places.

They do have an ‘animal handler’ to help out.

I show cats, and mine have been professionally done for yearbook pictures. Cats are a lot harder then dogs and it takes a very good and very patient photographer to get a quality picture of all of them together – if that’s what you want.

Individually its easier. We are using the same one we got our first Oci’s picture done – he’s very good and will do our 2nd Oci in October when he’s about a year old.

They usually have an assistant to use the cat toys, feathers, etc. Stay in the background and keep quiet unless the photographer wants you to help out.

How are your pets with normal cameras and flashes at home?

Added – its nice when you can see their previous pictures to judge the quality. I was at one show where I would NOT have paid for pictures – I could do as well as the photographer just by judging what she had done in the past. The guy I’m using has had pictures in cats’ magazines and is pretty reasonable with prices – well worth the cost (some are more expensive then others). He has my one Oci on his website too

Is it poisonous for them?

It’s probably not too good for them. Cats like to lick certain plastic things because of the oils and chemicals that are used in the production of these items. Apparently, they taste good to cats. For example, both of my parents’ cats lick plastic bags. It’s not toxic, but you shouldn’t let them lick it too much. I mean, if you catch your cat licking a picture, just roll your eyes and take it from him. You don’t have to call the vet.
